missing NTLDR with vista boot up

i have just installed vista and everything seems to be working ok. except that now what i switch the pc on and it runs the memory test the next message i get is missing NTLDR press ctrl alt delete to restart. the funny thing is if i leave the vista dvd in and get my pc to boot from the cdrom BUT dont let it boot from the cdrom (ie dont press a key when prompted) the pc boots normally and into vista. i guess one of my start up files must be corrupt but how do i repair it?

any suggestions gratefully received

thanks

matt

I take it that you have upgraded from XP

I'm sure NTLDR does not exist in Vista ?

    some interesting stuff here

    http://www.multibooters.co.uk/

The only action essential to remove Vista and restore the original boot sequence is to reinstate the previous PBR of the active partition. With XP/2K this is running one simple command from the Recovery Console – fixboot. Once you have done this and the machine is booting as before with no Vista boot menu you can safely delete the Vista OS and its boot files.

yes I do still have xp on a different drive. the way I read the links is that at the moment the vista is trying to boot with old start up files. if I use the command to set the boot partition I should be ok without deleting vista.

at the moment I want to make sure vista is working before I delete xp.

    cheers
