I did the usual go compare/money supermarket/compare the market searches for car ins last week, a few days later and my credit report is showing Swinton have made an inquiry against my credit report?
Why have they done this? I haven't even gone beyond the comparrason sites?
ETA: Title should read inquiry! sorry

What kind of search?
Insurers and brokers have been carrying out address and identity checks for years and they showed as "unrecorded enquiry," which means they are only visible to you.I am a mortgage broker. Perfectly normal,. I got mine a while back and the same, Several insurance companies had done a search. Identity check or unrecorded i think they said.
They are just checking you live at the address supplied and not just a made up name and address.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

It shouldnt is a more accurate answer. Some do an "unrecorded enquiry" which certainly doesnt. Others do a "insurance quote" (or something similar) which would be visable to lenders and it is down to the lender if they take it into consideration or not, logically they shouldnt but it is their call.
As to why insurers do it, some do it for ID checks, some do it to decide if they will offer installments or not and some do it and use it as a rating factor (if you've bad credit history you are both a fraud risk and a default on payment risk)0
