Have you got any insurance to cover you for when he is sick?

If not then he may be entitled to Employment Support Allowance. He may be entitled to contribution based ESA if he has paid the correct amount and class of NI contributions.

If not then he may be entitled to income based ESA which is means tested.

    Are you working?

He will not be entitled to ESA contributions based as he is self employed he will be paying a class 2 stamp which gives no entitlement into benefits. He may however qualify for ESA income based, this is means tested and will depend on whether you are working over 24 hours pw, whether there is any other income/savings etc. Go to https://www.direct.gov.uk for the info.

You may be thinking of contribution based JSA.

Contribution based ESA can be claimed if you have been paying class 2.

    Quote from Adviceguide:

The first contribution condition for contributory Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is that you must have actually paid Class 1 or 2 national insurance contributions in one of the last three tax years before you claim. However, you may be able to satisfy this condition with contributions paid in any tax year, if you haven’t been able to pay contributions recently - for example, because you were getting Carer’s Allowance or Incapacity Benefit, or if you were getting Working Tax Credit with a disability element before you became incapable of work.
The second condition is that you must either have paid or been credited with contributions for the last two tax years before you claim. However, credited contributions will not always count towards this condition.

You may be able to get Employment and Support Allowance if you have an illness or disability that affects your ability to work. Find out if you might be eligible for the two kinds available....

from our experience my hubby didn't get sick pay because he was self employed :( you may be entitled to housing/council tax benefit for the interim if you qualify.
Hope your husband makes a full recovery soon

    THIS IS COMPLETELY WRONG.

Class 2 NIC count towards contributions based health related benefits INCLUDING ESA. He will be entitled to contributions based ESA.

I think this has been covered already and the poster has admitted he made a mistake.

At least I put my correction a little more politely without the need for shouting :)
