Cashback CC Application (Amex?)

Hi guys,

I want to apply for a cashback CC some point in the near future - probably the Amex Platinum - and have a couple of questions that I'd like to ask your opinions on:

1) I've applied to Amex in the past and been declined (most recently Jan 12) - what do you think is an appropriate cooling off period before applying again? 6 months? Not really sure why I've been declined in the past, I have decent credit and earn about double the minimum salary for the card...

2) I recently (Apr 12) switched my banking from HSBC to First Direct but I have kept the HSBC account open so I can have their regular saver. On the Amex application it will ask how long I have been with my bank for and I get the feeling that only a few months with FD may be an issue. What do you think? Would it be naughty to just put my HSBC account (open for 10 years) down as my main account even though my salary doesn't go into it anymore?

3) What's a good waiting period between my last credit application (First Direct Gold CC at the start of May - accepted) and applying to Amex? Does it really matter as I'd have thought that only one recent application wouldn't be such a big deal?

4) I currently have the following CCs:

HSBC CC - £6000 limit balance usually no more than £600 and paid off in full each month.

Barclaycard Gold - £3000 limit and also paid off in full.

FD Gold Card - £3000 limit, only had it since May and not used it much. Probably didn't need to apply for it!

The HSBC card and Barclaycard have been open for years (8?) so I wanted to keep them open to show a long credit history but do you think it's worth closing either one of both of them? Would that benefit my Amex application significantly?

Sorry for all the questions (and long post!) but I want to stand the best possible chance of getting this card when I next apply and once I have it will probably use it exclusively for all spending. Don't want to apply and blow it as I'll likely be moving house in the next 6 months or so and no doubt that will shaft my credit report for a while!

Thanks!

  • Oh, and one other thing. My HSBC current account is a graduate account. Do you think that may have had something to do with my application to Amex being declined in January? (I wasn't with 1st Direct back then) Do CC companies look unfavourably on student/graduate accounts?

No, Amex wouldn't have known that it was a graduate account.
