so the blockage will still be floating around in the pipework ?

Very unlikely. The cold water pressure will push it back to your hot water cylinder where it will hopefully just sink to the bottom. It may even break up and come back through the tap and not cause a blockage next time. Who knows? You don't know what it is so can't make a judgement. All it is, is a quick fix that may be temporary or may be permanent. Just keep your fingers crossed.Thanks Djohn,
