My mother in law has a lovely house and at the bottom of her garden is a railway line in use.

I rented a house with the track 10yards outside the back fence. When viewing house the trains didn't seem to be noisy at all going past, well not much. BUT. In the quiet of the night when i was going to sleep it was different. I became obessed with them. I couldn't sleep untill the last one went past at 23-57. Woke me at 06-02 when the 1st arrived in the morning. Nightmare! Never again, never!0

I grew up one street away from a very busy train line. Back then there was a large shunting yard at the end of our street too. We were so used to the noise they made that we didn't take any notice of it. Visitors would ask 'what's that noise?' and we had to pause and listen because it wasn't obvious to us what they were asking about. (Hope that makes sense - it's way past my bedtime.
)
On the other hand I recently stayed at a hotel right next to a train line and the trains disturbed my sleep quite badly.If I lived there I don't know how long it would take me to get used to them, but I would much rather live near a train track than a busy road.
We live about half a mile from a very busy dual carriageway (with pretty much nothing but open countryside between us if that makes a difference). It was built around fifteen years ago and the constant low hum still grates on me.0 -
I do think it would be weird to write to the neighbours, but I don't think it would be odd to knock on their doors, introduce yourself as somebody who might be moving in, and see if they have time for a quick chat about the area.
I live under the flight path of Southampton Airport which fortunately doesn't operate at night. Locals have simply got used to it and it is a non-issue for most people. i would think the same for the average commuter line - it is only heavy freight that is noisy and causes vibrations if you are close.
I did hear of people who lived near a line near me that carried very heavy mineral trains bringing stone from the Mendips and the houses apparently shook when the trains went past a couple of times a week.RICHARD WEBSTER
As a retired conveyancing solicitor I believe the information given in the post to be useful assuming any properties concerned are in England/Wales but I accept no liability for it.0 -

Crikey, you're closer to me than I thought
I'm also under that flight path and the only real problem I had was interference on the telly when a piston-engined plane went over, now the telly's digital that problem has gone away.0
