Hi

I have a 2002 Peugeot 106, which has been making some strange noises for a couple of months now.

The noise itself seems to come from the engine bay, I can't be much more specific than that!

When I am turning a periodic knocking and squeaking and rattling noise is heard which is worse the faster and sharper the turn. So if I am applying the accelerator going uphill and turning the noise is worse.

I have had a search on the web and some of the common themes for this noise are CV joints, driveshafts, wheel bearings and brakes rubbing (pretty much in that order)

Also, when driving in a straight line, I've noticed my steering wheel is turned to the left (I don't know if this is related)

The "nearside ball joint" was changed 6 months ago, but I'm not sure if that coincided with this noise.

Approximately how much would it cost to have the CV joint and drive shaft replaced?

Are there any other 'tests' I can do to narrow down the possible causes before I take it to the garage?

Thanks

    OK...

First of all, turn the steering wheel whilst you're not moving. If you get the noise then it is either the power steering pump belt or the power steering pump.

If it only happens when you're on the move when turning and it is a very regular knock knock knock then its CV joint.

If it only happens when you're on the move when turning and it is an irregular knock then it is most likely suspension bush related.

It could be one or a combination of the above.

The steering wheel off center is a tracking related issue and may be related to having the ball joint replaced. They should check tracking after but seldom do.

Thanks, I've booked the car in for next week, in the meantime is it 'safe' to drive? By that I mean - I suspect it is something to do with the CV joint, are the wheels or something else likely to fall off?!

What is a reasonable total cost for changing a CV joint?

    Thanks

Just to put your mind at rest about the wheel falling off.

I had this on my peugeot 206 for about a year before eventually selling getting rid of the car. didn't seem to make any difference apart from making the noise. garage checked it out and couldnt find anything wrong with it (bit dubious about the quality of the garage though).

    Thanks, Chris.

On a side note, whenever I go over a puddle that causes the underside of the car to get wet, for a few seconds there is a squeaking/rattling noise. Could this be because a CV joint boot has broken so water can get in and cause a noise?

Anyone know how much replacing a CV joint might cost? Thanks

Boot will be ~£10 and an hours labour would be more than enough

Maybe you ran over a cat? They also don't like water...... :p

  • If your CV joint fails, your wheel won't fall off but you will lose all drive to the front wheels.

It's gone past the point of just needing a boot, it sounds like the cv joing needs doing.
