HB questions im confused

Hi

Have applied for HB & CTB they have replied with a huge list of requests for info
Now before I get lectures I am anti benefit fraud and realise that if I want my rent paid I have to give full disclosure of my current life however this seems odd

One of which is there was a chq deposited in your savings account in Feb 2012 for £85 what was it for ?

I honestly can't remember :( my life has been chaos and I struggle to remember what I did last week let alone last spring
It was probably for something I sold to someone but I really can't remember

When did your son leave home and whats his address now ?
He left home years ago and why do they want to know where he lives

I'm claiming from End of May and was not on benefit of any kind over the last 3 years why all the questions ?
I have a whole page of them :( how far back do I have to answer questions on ?

  • as far back as they ask,the bank might be able to help with details of who the chq was from, you could tell them you have no idea where son lives if you really object to telling them,or you could make life easy and just tell them

I'm guessing this is because it's not clear what you have been and are living off. It may not be obvious what has prompted your application at this time. Everything might be perfectly above board but it might not look that way if there's no obvious trigger for the claim.

You mentioned selling something - a private sale or self employment? So they might be wondering if it's a clue to income.

Perhaps they still have your son down as living there and want to make sure he's registered correctly for council tax.

If you want the state to intervene in your life because you can't pay for the roof over your head, you have accept that with that intervention comes with questions.

They have a duty to ensure everything is above board and you are eligible.

  • Hi all

    I have nothing to hide
My husbands redundancy triggered the claim and we were both employed when that happened not self employed
We were living off my husbands wages and I have already provided 2 months statements for every account we have

I have realised what the chq was I sold some of my old clothes to a clothing exchange I am not used to dealing with benefit issues and it all feels very invasive
Im sure once your in the system and used to it it feels less so :-(

Of course it's invasive. If they asked no questions at all and just paid out upon receipt of application then what do you suppose would happen to the number of illegal claims? Rhetorical question!

If you have nothing to hide in your bank account then you shouldn't need to worry. When I applied for LHA I asked them why they needed my bank account details, they only asked for 2 months by the way, they said it was just so show you didn't have an income that I wasn't declaring. Sounded reasonable to me.
  • We are due our deposit from the last rental back hopefully in the next week or so
We had to borrow our first months rent & deposit off a family member to move into our cheaper rental, will this deposit return be counted as income ?
Because we have to give most of it straight back to MIL

So it probably was just to confirm it wasn't an income. Some people are just more "thorough" it seems.

    No.
  • Thank you all for your answers the situation has moved on and I wonder if I can ask for some more advice

We applied back in 2009 - 2010 when OH was made redundant we went to JSA appt together and they did all the paperwork for all benefits together

This time HB & CTB benefit have been awarded however here is the time line of events I would like to appeal to have it backdated which at the moment has been refused

Am I correct to appeal and and I likely to succeed any answers gratefully received

OH is already on anti anxiety meds after suffering a breakdown in Dec last year

April OH is warned that work is drying up and as he's still in a 6 month probationary period he may be released

    Gets laid off May 4th

Applied online for JSA on 6th May

Had phone interview then he attended centre on his own as I was at work, received letter dated 11th (arrived Monday 14th May) letter said no to JSA as too few class 1 NI contributions in qualifying year (5 april 2010 - 5th april 2011)

We got a JSA rejection letter due to not enough NI in qualifying year

Rang jobcentre on 15th May was advised that I need to apply for HB & CTB direct

It did take me a few days to find all the relevant paperwork, statements etc.. council received papers on wed 30th but only count application from monday after that so the 4th June
They will pay from 4th June but not from 4th May

Obviously we still had to pay this rent with no income and borrowed from family which we have to repay
The lady said well you claimed before so you knew HB existed
But as I said we were waiting to hear about JSA until 14th May so is 14th May to 30th May really such an issue
I may have claimed once before 2 years ago but had no idea about time restrictions :-(
The system seems to have changed since last time

    any advice please ?
  • Any one please :-(

You said in your OP that it was from end of May then in post 9 it is 4th May.

Can you clarify when you applied and when you wanted it back dating to.
