Car insurance company say i haven't told them about a claim that never happened

In 2009 i came out of Tesco and my car looked like someone had thrown muck/dust all down the side of my car, it was so dirty i couldn't see if there was any damage. When i got home i rang sheila's wheels to inform them of this because i thought you had to tell them things immediately, why i didn't clean the car first to check i don't know i can only think i was in shock.
Well when my husband came home and we cleaned it someone had obviously scratched it and thrown muck over it to hide it. Luckily there were no dents and a friend of a friend tcutted it for me so no need to claim on the insurance as there was nothing to claim for. But when i came to renew my insurance in may 2010 it was listed on my policy so i rang them up and they said "oh we just list it as you told us about it but it doesn't affect anything" my insurance hadn't gone up so i renewed in 2010 and 2011. But this year it had gone up a third so i decided to shop about, Zurich came out the best so i took their policy out, now they've written to me telling me i've made a claim i didn't tell them about and they want all the info on it. I'm gutted cause now they think i'm a liar and it will put my insurance up for something that never happened, can they do this.
Zurich say i need to get sheila's wheels to wipe this off my records, sheilas wheels say its only mentioned and its not a claim so why are zurich making a fuss about it.

Zurich are doing nothing wrong. The claim in on the CUE database.

Suggest that you obtain a letter from SW's and to send this to Zurich, which will hopefully clarify the matter.

You will have to declare having registered the claim event, for 5 years from the date you registered it, when you ever change Insurers.

If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

There was a similar thread, which I can't find, about a similar non -event. It was eventually removed from the CUE database, after a complaint to a high enough level in the insurance company. If you have no joy, escalate it, put it in writing, and hopefully some action with be taken. If not, you can apply to see the record yourself from the CUE database, http://www.insurancedatabases.co.uk/default.aspx#dataprotection

The wording is usually claims or incidents even if no claim has been made.

Thanks for your help, i was very upset yesterday the letter i had received made me feel like a criminal. Sheilas wheels are listening to my call to see what i said so that i can tell Zurich exactly what happened, after all it was nearly 3 years ago and i can't remember precisely what i said last week. SW think Zurich are making a mountain out of a molehill. I have decided that if Zurich want to put my premiums up because of this non event i'll threaten them both with the financial ombudsmen and hope that between them they get it sorted.

Just to update, SW rang and left me a message yesterday and said the claim was opened in error and is now closed. I've informed Zurich who after several phone calls between the 3 of us have decided that it won't affect my premiums as it doesn't exist. Zurich weren't as helpful as Swheels, i do think my mentioning the Ombudsman may have helped.
    Thanks for your help.

Zurich - Make sure you keep your fingers crossed at all times. Have you read some of the stories of people being on the receiving end of some shocking customer service. If you end up in a claims dispute with them, be prepared for a long running saga.
