PAYE in full time job but also have part time job - confusion

I have a full time job PAYE earning over £20000 (I don't want to say the exact amount but it is under £30000). Everything is sorted out by the wages department. 6 months ago I got an additional part time bar job. I get a pay slip which says PAYE too. They have seen my last P60. The manager said that as I am not working many hours for them I won't have to pay tax. This surprised and confused me, as I know (think?) the first four thousand and something is tax free, I assumed that was worked out in my main job as they don't know about my bar job. In the pub I usually earn between £50 and £75 a week. Although last week I earned £99 and paid 27p NI (I have not paid NI in the bar job before then).

So should I be paying tax in my bar job? Have they made a mistake? I don't want to suddenly get in trouble with the tax man and get a huge bill.

Thanks in advance!

Yes you should. Your tax free allowance is taken by your other job and you only get one. You should be paying basic rate (BR) tax and NI on your bar earnings. You'll then need to send the P60s for both jobs to the tax office to get them to calculate what you should have paid.

By the sounds of it you won't earn enough to need to pay any higher rate tax, but the IR will work it out for you!

My first couple of pay slips in the bar job said BR then once they had seen my P60 it now says 489L. Maybe I should have said this originally. Does this make a difference? I don't want to break the law! If I now speak to the tax office I assume I won't get fined or anything? Or do I need to do something before the start of April? Help!!

from what you say your bar job should be BR and you will pay a little NI once you earn more than about 100 per week.

I would suggest you speak to your bar job people...do they know you have a full time job. Its probably too late to do anything for this tax year but speak to the tax man ..they wont blame you but you may have some tax to pay.

Your bar employer is wrong - they need to change it back and backdate it.

If they are difficult with you, speak to the tax office and ask them to send a BR rate tax notification to your bar job.

Don't panic too much cos you can get it sorted after you get your 2 P60s (in May-ish) as in my post above.

The bar does know I have a main job. Maybe I should speak to the wages department in my main job. They are after all professional in that as opposed to the bar manager who is just a pub professional (If that makes sense!)

    Thanks Clapton and Brazilianwax (ouch?!!)
