Thinking of renting house out....

I am in the airforce and next year I am thinking of applying for a posting outside the UK. But this means that I either sell or rent my house, it was hard enough getting on the property market so I do not want to sell.

Renting seems my best option but I have never had any dealings with it or looked into it. Does anyone know of any pack-ups for people considering becoming a landlord. Want to read up on the regulations, letting agency fee's (as I won't be in the country to manage it myself) etc.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

  • Hi Ads

I have rented out a property in the past, and on one occasion I had extremely bad tenants. They did a lot of damage, and sometimes these sort of people slip in with good references. I was lucky I had an extremely good agent at the time!

Find a good agent with a good reputation, they normally charge 10%. If you are away for a very long period try and get your best friend to keep an eye on it for you!

    Good Luck

    Hi Ads,
Try this site, it's very helpful:
    http://www.landlordzone.co.uk
Also, if you use a letting agent, be very careful when you sign their Terms and Conditions. They often have unnecessary charges for renewing the tenancy every year.
    Hope it works out.
  • cheers gillan, will look into it. I had come across that site when I did a google search. might register on it as they have forums.
