Summer childcare/activities for a teenager ?

I fear my teenage son is going to use the summer holiday as a means to run up my electric bill whilst he plays XBox all summer. I live in the midlands and was wondering if anyone knows of any outdoor activities/groups/programs/summer camps that I can sign him up for to get him out the house more?

The YHA are running summer camps called 'Do it 4 Real'. There's a choice of action adventure, go extreme, future leader and performing arts camps, depending on what your lads into. My kids have been going there the past few years and have loved it. It's worth checking them out.

Kerrang radio keeps harping on about this in their ad breaks, for 16-17 year olds. It says many places are free, with the most you have to pay being £80. Involves 3 weeks of activities though, 1 away from home. Doesn't look too bad having a read.

Our council runs a summer program of free or cheap activities every day during the summer holidays. Also, there are holiday clubs for 3-16 year olds. My son is booked into one for 10 days of the summer (costs about £28 a day). Check out your local sports centres and secondary schools - they often run summer holiday clubs.

I have also seen flyers for summer dance camps, drama workshops, and an educational club that works on literacy and numeracy skills.

  • I am not trying to make spam, I am new to MSE and I thought I was helping people save. It might not be an opportunity for londonsurrey or fruit and nut case, but maybe other people like me will find this new opportunity really pretty good.
  • I have noticed MSE says 'give new posters a chance and be especially nice'. My first experience of this site has been neither. I am not that good with a computer and did not even understand what spam was until I looked it up a minute ago.
  • Many schools run summer schools with sports and fun activities.
