Car insurance for an 18 yr old student

My daughter passed her driving test recently.
As mentioned in the title - she's only 18.
She doesn't own a car, and probably won't do, until she leaves uni. We're looking at the cheapest ways of insuring her to drive my wife's car. Has anyone looked at temporary car insurance? If so, does it have to be with your current insurer?
Are there any other cheap options?

Many thanks

Nick

Temporary insurance is never cheap, Could be £10 - £30 a day.

Add her as an additional driver to your wifes policy? Risk there is if she has a bump your wife may lose her no claims. Excess is usually higher for new drivers and no claims probably not protected for younger drivers.

Also short term policies and named driver on wifes policy etc. Will not earn her any no claims discount of her own.

Maybe cheaper to get her a little car, Something not popular, Old VW Polo, Nissan Micra, Skoda Fabia, Daewoo Matix, Peugeot 106, Fiat Cinquecento or similar cars.

Insure that even if its not driven, It will earn no claims bonus that will be worth a decent discount after 1 year.

Have you actually spoken to your wife's insurance company yet and what have they said they will charge?

Is she currently at Uni? Will she only drive during the holidays on the odd occasion or does she live at home and commute to Uni and will use the car more regularly?

Are your wife's insurers prepared to insure your daughter to drive the vehicle - not all will so I suggest that this might be your first step - get the info, post back and see what the feedback is.

You may already be getting a good quote.
  • Thanks for your replies bouncydog & forgotmyname.
My daughter's due to start uni in Sept (pending A level results!).
Our current insurer won't insure under 21 yr olds.
She'll only be driving during the holidays.
We looked at buying a cheap car for her, but this just seems a bit of an extravagance, as it'll just be sat in our drive.
I think we'll use the daily insurance route, expensive as you say, but in total, it should be less money to fork out.

    Thanks again,

    Nick

Will she be living at home whilst going to uni though?

I think that may inpact the insurers view and put the flags up to see if your fronting or not.

Only use it during the holidays but lives at home. Would it not be tempting to use it for uni instead when its raining cats and dogs and lugging all the coursework on public transport etc.

  • Hi, thanks again for your comments.
She'll be living at/near Uni - 150+ miles from us.
So not much chance of using the car unless she's back home....
