  • Hi ThriftLady. Thanks, I'd really appreciate the info on farm shops around Worcester. :D
  • Food doesn't have to be complicated to be good. Chicken breast can be easily marinated in olive oil, balsamic vinegar and a little white wine and then seasoned with salt and black pepper and gently roasted and served with lightly steamed carrots, brocoli and mashed potato, just as an example.

I love all the sauces, stews and curries, but meat and two-veg really is the best way to start to get to know your way around food and cooking in my opinion, as you build your confidence in the cooking techniques you can elaborate from there. That's how I started many years ago, and this evening I prep'd some Tandoori marinade (lime juice, yoghurt, garlic and spices), a chicken (cut into relevant pieces) and an onion puree for tomorrow nights curry dinner, and also prep'd a home-made lasagne for lunch tomorrow (including home-made wholemeal pasta, home-made ragu sauce using fresh tomatoes and home-made bechamel sauce) as well as cooking sausage and chips for tonights dinner!

Start simple, enjoy it, and build from there.

    Honestly, it's not that hard.

When I was young, all my friends cooked, when it was my turn, they'd say they'd come but only if we could have take away.

When I met my husb, we had a house and a cat from a rescue centre.
After just 2 days in December, I woke husb to tell him how clever Dolly had been. She'd gone out and come back when I called her.

@Why did she go out?' he asked
'cos the back door was open,' I replied.

'Why was the back door open?'
    'To let the smoke out.'

Yes I'd set fire to the cooker, cos I didn't realise you didn't cook everything on high.

Basically bung almost everything in the oven at gas mark 5 or electric 200, take it out when it looks ready. Poke meat and if juices are clear, that is not blood coloured, it's done.

About 20 mins for chops, 1 - 2 hrs joints/chickens depending on size.

Spuds, cut 'em small for mash, bigger an dpar boiled for roast, hot oil in the oven ready.

And almost everything comes with instructions. Good luck.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
  • Thanks guys. I really appreciate all your help. Can I ask, what foods do you think I should keep in? Bothin the cupboard and fridge/freezer. Thanks in advance :D

I do actually have all of those things in, I'm quite impressed :T
  • A quick and easy low fat meal is Mushroom omlette (2 eggs no fat in pan), Jacket potato (10 mins in microwave) and a tin of sweetcorn.

I cook a few extra meals on a sunday, when the oven is on, that way I'm not faced with cooking everyday.

  • Can't cook? Go to catering college/night school. You go in one end a tyro, you come out the other end a chef.

You can't go wrong with soup - easy, cheap and healthy. All you need is a big pot, half fill it with water, add a veg stock cube and then random vegetables (chop them up a little - how many or how much is up to yourself) and boil it for 5 mins and simmer for 25 mins. Blend it then if you don't like it lumpy.

The great thing about this is that it can't go wrong and you can use what ever you like or whats lying around.
