Yes, you are unless your landlord agrees to you only paying the rent until the day you vacate. Even without a formal contract rent is normally paid monthly in advance so if you leave part-way through the month you have no automatic right to not pay the rent in full.

The period of rental is 1 month, so you have to pay in full months. If you use part of a month you have to pay the full month.

It's comparable to car hire, which has a rental period of a full day. If you hire a car for Mon 8.00am to Tues 11.00am, you pay for 2 full days.

Not enough information to know this for sure. And even if the assumptions are right, it is not a calender month....

    *is this Eng/Wales?

my landlord hasn't given me a contract
did you ever have a written contract and if so what start/end dates?
    * do you pay rent weekly? bi-weekly? monthly?

However it is likely you need to give a months notice ending with a rental period (so it might be as long as 7 weeks or so!).

OP - your post strongly suggests that there has definitely never been any written contract but this does not mean that you can simply pick how much notice you will give your LL.

If you have been paying your rent monthly (as in pcm, rather than lunar month/4 weekly) then your LL is correct because the frequency of those payments have established the relevant period.

If OP pays rent more frequently than monthly, his notice period would only be reduced from 1 month to 4 weeks. So no significant benefit there.
However, as the notice must expire with a tenancy period, it might allow it to expire sooner.
