The impending crash will affect those whose computers have been infected with the nasty 'Alureon/DNS Changer bot' when the FBI takes down the servers at 12.01 a.m. on Monday, July 9.

Users whose computers are still infected on Monday will lose their ability to go online, and they will have to call their service providers for help deleting the malware and reconnecting to the Internet.

Despite repeated alerts, the number of computers that probably are infected is more than 277,000 worldwide, down from about 360,000 in April.

Of those still infected, the FBI believes that about 64,000 are in the United States.

    Apparently My PC is OK.

My first though was "oh no not another scare story", especially as a Google returned the Daily Fail as the first hit :-)

However I followed a link from the Register to the FBI site and used their checker.

There was also the Alureon (aka TDSS, Tidserv) issue with a Windows update a couple of years ago. The first some XP users knew that they were infected with the rootkit was after installing the update (MS10-015) the machine BSoD'd and failed to boot up.

This has been grossly overplayed in some quarters. The number of people who will be using this rogue DNS server is miniscule (most will be using their ISP servers set up in their routers and unaffected by this virus). Even if they did lose that DNS server in most cases there is a second server configured that it will fall back to. So a non event.

  • oh yes, i worked in IT. We all got £800 for being on standby Dec30-Jan3. Ofc we'd tested and fixed all the systems months beforehand, but we never let on. It was money for nothing.

In 1999 agencies were contacting me with jobs that paid £27k lump sum up front to take on roles spanning the millenium bug days .... wish I'd said yes to one of them now. That was a lump sum on top of the pay, which at the time was usually £35-50k jobs.
