How long for HMRC to process form IHT400 re inheritance tax?

Sorry if this is a 'How long is a piece of string?' question, I fear it is.
Long story short, mum died last July and we still haven't got the Grant of Probate - useless Solicitor. He said he posted off form IHT400 and IHT402 to HMRC last week, so I was just wondering how long it should take to hear back from them?
There isn't any inheritance tax to pay as we are claiming to transfer the unused nil rate band from my late father's estate.
Do the forms got to one large central office for processing or to local offices?
Thanks
