Grant's been working at Phil's small garage for nine years. Barring the odd disagreement, the two have always got on well. Yet in his final paypacket he's been paid for the full months work, yet he's only actually done three weeks worth. Should he own up to the overpayment, or should he keep schtum?

He should mention it to his boss, he could be pleasently suprised to find out it was a gift for his hard work, failure to do so could ruin his chance of return if all doesn't work out in his new job !0 -
In response to carlw, I would take the money too. It is not for me to monitor my salary it is for payroll to take care of. If I were challenged I would say I did not keep much of an eye on my salary going into my bank (which I never do, I just assume it is correct) or the amount on the cheque, whatever, and I would offer to pay it back if they wanted me to. That way I would stand a good chance of getting a bit more pay and wouldn't seem dishonest if the mistake was realised. What am I meant to be, Glinda the Good Fairy?:p0

This happened to me about 6 years ago with the company that i worked for about 6 years ago and then again in my december 2007 wage packet.
Basically I share the same surname and job position as one of my fellow workers. He does a bundle of o/time and I dont when I checked my wage slip I had gained an extra 16 hours of o/time seems there was a glitch in the payroll system bosses told me before I had even got my wage slip open and told me just to keep some of it back for JAnuary wage as they will take it out of that wage oh well it was nice having it even for a short while.
It also reminds me of an ex-girl friend I knew who on taking up a new job nearly thought she'd hit the jack pot when she saw the astronomical size of her salary turns out the entire workforce 430 had there salaries directed soley to her bank account.
But luckily (???????) for her the wages department got to warn her before she packed her bikini and offted it to the cayman islands Happy DAys!!!0 -
Quick point, if you are over-paid, inform the pay department. If they insist the pay is correct, then they loose all legal rights to reclaim it if they later find-out they were wrong.Never Knowingly Understood.

They are more than colleagues (sp?), they are friends, he should mention it for sure. You never know it might have been a bonus and he would get to keep it anyway, regardless, I am sure he will get it back in free drinks over the course of their friendship!DEBT FREE AND LOVING LIFE0

Well when i was working for a central government agency i was working full time for 4 months until i had to back to university, they had agreed to let me carry on working 2 days a week. When i recieved my salary slip after the first ammended hours month, i found that i had been paid a whole months salary instead of 8 days!! I immediately told my manager who informed me that he would pass it onto HR, i thought that the matter would be soon resolved. However after repeated requests to my manager and HR no money was deducted from my account. When i left (due to uni timetable changes) i had been paid 3 whole months work for 24 days!!! A year and a half has passed and that money still hasnt been deducted. So i guess its now time for me to go on a shopping spree!!
so, i think Grant should tell his boss that he was overpaid. If it is a mistake then it should be rectified if it wasnt it would be a pleasant bonus!0 -
was any holiday pay added on? maybe they have underpaid him!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

If Grant owns up, his honesty will be remembered and valued, and when he needs a favour from Phil (the boss), he'll be treated much more favourably.
You have written very nice thought.

It happened to me in 1981, when the Company (they shall remain nameless) I was working for changed from proper pay-packets (the ones with real money in) to BACS, they actually paid in my bank account my bank sort code 309977 rather than £68.
First thing I did was transfer £ 310,000 to my savings account, then told my Personnel Manager that I thought the Wages Department made a mistake, not specifying what the mistake was, I was assured that they would look into it, please bear in mind that my payslip was correct, yet it happened again the following week, I did the transfer again and reminded Personnel that wages were making a mistake....it went on for another fortnight.....goes without saying that I paid the money back using a personal cheque....the satisfaction of writing a cheque in the early eighties for close to one and a quarter million was amazing....
The beauty of it is that I got nearly £7,000 in interest which i used as the deposit on my first home!Nobody is perfect, except me of course
Please note: my opinions are mine alone, nobody asked me to have them, obliged me to have them or even coerced me to have them, they are mine but they are free, so if you want to share them I will not charge you for it!
