Freeview youview what's the difference?

Hi guys

Am thinking about ditching sky, have just given up the hd package and about to give up sky movies as now use lovefilm instant via a laptop onto tv. So now thinking about if we could manage without sky entirely, will miss sky one if we do but could use lovefilm or Netflix to catch watch these programmes later maybe. Only other think would be kids programmes as alternatives only seem to have cbbc, citv, cbeebies.

Anyway, was looking at freeview and came across youview, I can't seem to see a massive difference between channel choices, am I right in thinking that the only massive difference would be having the box hooked up to Internet so that can access catch up tv?

You are correct in you assumptions, Sky have recently announce that their NowTV service will be available on the YouView platform

The key to YouView is the internet connection, if you have a slow connection the on demand streaming is likely to have problems.
It would also be a good idea to have an unlimited broadband contract as streaming programmes uses a lot of data.
Its not aimed at people who use PS3/Xbox/Wii etc to access on demand content rather those who want quick and easy access to on demand services through a single box.

This looks interesting, have come across a human box that hooks up to Internet to do something similar with freeview, am thinking this new youview may be the way forward and wonder if freeview format will fall by the wayside in future.

Just wondering about Netflix or lovefilm, currently streaming to tv from laptop, would be quite nice to have all of these in one set top box,,,, any rumours that this may happen?

You are not understanding this. The Youview Humax box is a twin tuner freeview PVR. The Youview on demand internet service is in addition to freeview.
The boxes software integrates both services.

Will need to come down a fair bit in price to get mass market uptake;certainly from my perspective needs to be less than £200.
Currently I have my laptop connected to TV via VGA port for I Player etc.and a much cheaper Freeview+ box.
Not willing to pay ~ £300 for a bit more convenience!!:)

This freeview box seems to do the same as the youview boxes in that it integrates catch up tv with the freeview channel line up, it also seems a bit cheaper than the youview boxes. £260 will get me a 1Tb model, not sure what storage the youview box is but guessing its 500? For £299

It seems that there has been talk that youview will bring on additional content in due course using the Internet connection, this may include Netflix according to some on avforums, I wondered if you had heard something similar?

The question for me is really one of cost, should I pay more for a product that "may" offer more in the future or make do with the freeview set up above which seems to offer the same service as youview already

No, the Humax T2 is just a standard Freeview HD PVR.
