Temporary car insurance - 1 month more expensive than 12? Joke!!!

So my brother, who's 19 with 3 points & 1yrs NCDs had a Polo which he replaced with a Golf TDI which was a jump of about 10 insurance groups.
He's with elephant so he calls them for a temp insurance quote & they say about £35 for 28 days. He pays up & everything is sweet & eventually swaps the insurance over when the Polo sold. Happy days.

My mums Nova is about to die so she's bought a Focus. My mum is 49, no points, god knows how many years NCDs as she's been driving for 25+ years & never claimed.
My mum pays £169 for 12 months with the AA on the Nova (insurance due in Jan) & did a quote for the Focus which was £189 for 12 months.

She calls the AA to get temp cover & they say sorry we don't do it. Try "Tiger".

So we try Tiger & they want something like £265 for 28 days!!!!
Try another temp cover website & they want similar.

Who in their right mind would pay £265 for 28 days when it's £189 for 12 months?!?!

The car isn't actually getting used. It's being stored on a private car park until it's ready for use (all paperwork legit). Can't understand it when my brothers was so cheap.

So it simply wont be getting paid at that stupid price. Does anyone know of any reasonable sites or insurers?

Sounds like the Elephant quote was a change of details not a separate temporary policy.

Try ecarinsurance (can't remember their site but google will find them). I've always found them a LOT less than more memorable places like tempcover.com when I've needed short term cover. Last example was for 3 days on a Citroen C5 which they charged £32 compared to around £60 from all the others.

Pretty sure they also do "payg" monthly policies which work out cheaper than daily short-term cover if you need more than a couple of weeks.

It is probably right. The short-term insurers are taking on a higher risk (there is always a reason behind short-term insurance) and both types of insurance take on all of the possible risks from the second the insurance is valid, so their ultimate exposure is the same anyway.

Just sounds like a big time rip off to me. It just wont get paid, simple as. Nobody in their right mind will pay that figure for what it is.

There should be insurance there for a car you're not going to drive. I know most temp insurance will be for cars that'll set wheels on the road - but this one wont, so there's zero chance it'll be in a RTA. It's basically just wanting to be insured against theft, that's all at the moment.

EDIT: ecarinsurance was the 2nd site i tried actually. Looks like the insurance can't be any cheaper then - & therefore wont be getting paid. Will just have to take the risk vs theft as it's simply not worth it for 28 days. If the car was worth thousands then yes, but as it stands, no.

exactly why has the new car got to be 'laid up' for 28 days??

The new car has no tax. She could take the slip & pay for tax, but she gets tax for free being disabled, so she's not going to pay for it when she's entitled to it free. Yes she could get a refund on months not used, but wont pay for months when she gets tax for free.

She has a full tank of fuel in her current car - so there's £60 straight away or thereabouts. So she'll be using that up before it gets scrapped. A month should see it right.

When my daughter bought another car she transferred her insurance to it and her insurer let her keep her old one insured on a weekly basis until it was sold.
It didn't involve starting a new policy both cars were insured on the same one.

Why not leave the new car with the dealer until the tax situation is sorted.

If you're not even using it and it's not on a public road, go for "lay up insurance", which will cover against fire, theft, damage etc. I think Adrian Flux offer this.
