Why have train fares become so expensive?

For our wedding at the end of June, we booked up as early as we possible could. Prices were good from Lancs-Edinburgh. Standard was about £10, first class was about £20. Advanced saver i think it was called.

Anyway, we're looking to go back at the beginning of Oct. The missus has looked at the 2nd week of Oct & she can't book for that, so that suggests we've got in at the earliest possible time for the first week in Oct.
Anyway, 1st class ticket i think she said is about £400. There's 5 of us going again & the cheapest is looking at £60 per person thereabouts & that's not 1st class.

Why such a price hike? What's happened in the world of trains?

Two Companies operate trains from Lancaster to Edinburgh;

Virgin Trains haven't released their cheap Advance singles, use this website to see when their release.

First Transpennie also haven't released their Advance tickets either, use this website for their release date.

Shouldn't be long now, maybe next week (Thurs/Fri).

I also suspect you are too early, My wife has just booked a Leeds to Glasgow single for three weeks time and paid just £10.
