Visa debit overseas charges

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of excessive visa charges.

I'm currently working in ghana, took money out on nationwide visa debit at a standard chartered ATM, was charged the £1 and 2% fee by nationwide separately but visa have taken a commission of over 10% off the spot rate based on xe.com.

I've complained and they said they are looking into it, understand that there might be issues with non mainstream currencies, ghanaian cedis in this case. More worrying is that they don't actualy know themselves referred me to xe.com, then said it would be nationwide and now are presumably checking with standard chartered, all a bit disorganised really.
