I'm getting my knickers in a twist over this one.
I have a hedge that will be 10m long when planted.
The plants need to be 3 or 4 to a metre and planted in a double staggered row.
So how far apart do they need to be and how many plants do I need?

3 or 4 to the metre , so let us say 3 .5 , which comes to 35 plants for 10 metres . Divide your 10 mtres into two rows , 17 ?? plants to a row .
Divide your 10 metres by 17 .
But your not going to do that , just buy the plants and do it by eye ......its only a hedge and the plants will all grow at different rates.0 -
But I thought that because one metre ran into another, that would mean some plants doing both metres...
so less plants.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
You are thinking of ten 'I' metre sections joined together.
Just keep it simple and think one long section of ten metres
Will be thinking of a short hedge next year, need colour so I was thinking Red Robin? your thoughts please.0 -

My dad has a 15 mtr laurel hedge planted along a boundary and we used 3 per meter spread across a double row. The row was around 24" deep.
So that was 45ish (think he bought 50 we had a few left over) plants in total spread over both rows. First plant row one, next one row 2 etc making a zigzag pattern.
No idea if it's the right way to do it but it's a very nice thick hedge now, planted around 4/5 years ago.
I agree with wallbash you need 30-40 plants, a good fork and spade and plenty of rest breaks.0
