Distorted sound on tv

Hi, I have a sony crt tv connected to a panasonic dvd hdd recorder via a scart lead as the tv doesn't have a hdmi connection.
We used to have the tv connected to a freeview box and the sound was absolutely fine. Now however since connecting it to only the hdd recorder (which has freeview in it) the sound is slightly distorted and echoey.
You can also hear the tv channel playing in the background while watching something you have recorded?
Any ideas on how to fix this will be gratefully received, thanks.
