House Tidy Help Req.!!

Options
Hi

Been lurking here for a while. I have a problem and I have a feeling that people here can help me with.

I work very long hours and live on my own so have very little time to do the housework etc. and because i have so little time i end up feeling daunted and then things get on top of me and every couple of months I have to spend a day getting things sorted.

The other thing is im not very good at planning things - basically give me a list and its done whereas if i have to go about it myself it doesnt happen.

So really im looking a cleaning schedule. This is the free time i have to get the house ship shape.

Monday work 8.30 till 6.30pm evening time available aprox 7pm till bed time.

Tuesday - no free time work from 8.30 am till midnight

Wednesday - work 8.30am - 10.00pm free from 10.30 till bed time

Thursday - work 8.30 till 6.30 free from 7pm till bed time

Friday - work 8.30 till 6.30 free from 7pm till bed time

Saturday - work 7am - 3pm home for 3.30pm

Sunday - Off but visit parents from 12.30 - approx 7pm

So can some one give me a schedule ? - its a 3 bedroom house plus front room, kitchen and sunlounge.

Look at the flylady thread (one above you at mo) and look at the daily lists. you can adapt to suit.

Everyone i know that has tried it has been converted!

Plus there is usually friendly banter of some kind going on.

Hi I agree with shell, take a look on the flylady thread the lists for the following day go up the evening before (on page 1) try to do as much as you can from the list but don't worry about missing something because it always comes around the following week. They are a lovely bunch who will welcome you with open arms! Hth

I agree with Pooky, that's some loooonnnng work hours!

People that are so time-poor are usually cash-rich. If you are too, pay someone else to clean/tidy your place while you enjoy the little time you have for yourself, your interests, hobbies and friends.

And if you're not earning loadsamoney, what the xxxx are you doing working 6 days a week???

I'm not trying to be funny or unfriendly, just giving my own perspective. If I worked those hours you bet I'd be getting a cleaner!
    Cogito, ergo sum.
  • Wow! What horrendous hours you work :( I have to agree, I would seriously consider a cleaner if you can afford it, otherwise, unless it really gets you down or is becoming unhygienic I'd be tempted to leave things to do in "bulk" as you are doing. You have precious little time to yourself as it is. The flylady thread is useful to build a routine if you want to though.

I hope you enjoy your job. Good Luck with your mission

    Do take care of yourself

This is'nt really a cleaning suggestion, but have you thought about taking something with you if it does not live in the room you're in?

By that I mean if something lives upstairs (or should be upstairs!!) eg clothes then take it with you when you are going upstairs, or leave it near the stairs for the next trip in that direction. Or if there is an empty cup in the living room take it into the kitchen - try and make a point of not going anywhere without taking something with you. I hope that makes sense?

Something else I try when things get desperate is to or move or remove 10 items from whatever room you are in. (e.g. 10 bits of rubbish into the bin) You would be surprised how much you can do If you try this once a day in each room in your house - you would be amazed how much gets done and this means it wont be there when you next get a chance to do a little housework.

    Best of Luck

Neilersmc, looking at your schedule, doing housework during the week is not really an option for you. Give yourself time to chill out and wind down to get a decent night's sleep after a full day's work. Make sure that you tidy up after yourself as you go, clean up spills straight away and put everything away after you have used it. This stops stuff building up in piles.Open your mail near the bin and discard/recycle any junk mail. Keep the rest on a bulldog clip in a visible place to deal with when you have the time.
Think "Don't put it down, put it away".

Do you have a place for everything? If not, either make a home for it or give it away and bless someone else with it. Less stuff makes housework easier.
Think "If it doesn't have a home, it's not staying in mine "

On Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings an hour or two's dusting, polishing & vacuuming and cleaning the kitchen and bathroom will be enough to keep the house clean. You could do the upstairs one day and the downstairs the other. Not everything needs doing as often as you might think. Some of us manage months between cleaning windows or sweeping under the bed ;) Your guests won't mind the odd cobweb.

folks cheers for the tips - its been a great help.

For those of you that wanted to know what i do. Basically i have 2 jobs. The first one is a civil servant then 2 evenings a week and Saturday 7-3pm work part time at a supermarket.

No im not super rich the combined salary after tax etc in my hand = £16,000

I took on the second job to clear my student debts which i now have done and to do work on the house. I just have to replace the bathroom and then the house is finished.

Im determined this is it - I reckon once I get myself into a pattern it will come easy.

    Hi neilersmc,

You sound very determined and well done you for doing all you can to clear your student debts.

As others have suggested try the flylady threads.........latest one here

Each day there's a suggested list which may help....you don't have to follow the list but it does help (me) with motivation. There's a great motivational/comunity on that thread and they don't judge.........do as little or as much as you can manage and they'll still manage to encourage you to do a little bit more.

    Good luck,

    Pink
