To be pedantic, they're 397g. :) Still good VFM, though.

I've got 4 tins of the normal (heavy?) version for this ...

    ICE CREAM

    Makes approx. 750ml

    INGREDIENTS

    300ml carton of double cream
    400g tin of condensed milk

    METHOD

Put the ingredients into a bowl. Mix thoroughly. Whip until it resembles clotted cream,

Gently stir in any flavouring (see below).

Put the contents into a shallow dish. Put the dish in the freezer.

Every hour or so, move the frozen bits from the edge of the dish into the middle. After about 4 hours, it should all be frozen.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERATIONS

For coconut ice cream, substitute a 400ml tin of coconut milk for the double cream. Mix thoroughly.

For Malteser ice cream, add a 37g bag of Maltesers. Put it in the freezer until they are frozen. Make a small hole in the bag. With a rolling pin or any other blunt object, hit the bag until the Maltesers are completely broken up.

For peanut ice cream, add some peanut butter.

For strawberry ice cream, add a punnet of strawberries. Liquidise most, chop some.

I wonder what that would be like made with the Caramel version? Dulce de Leche ice cream...

That's a bargain...might need to pop in next time I pass waitrose and stock up in advance of my christmas baking (seems to be the only time of year I use the stuff!)

Just to update the ice cream recipe, half a 340g jar of peanut butter, preferably crunchy, seems about the right amount. Pour on some caramel/toffee and chocolate ice cream sauce for "Snickers" ice cream.

Waitrose do seem to be repositioning themselves lower down the market.

If evaporated milk is the same, lidl do tins for 48p
  • I just bought a zillion cans of co-op condensed milk for 13p each (reduced at my local for unknown reason).

I tipped up an opened one in the fridge without noticing and drenched everything in it!
    ''apply within'' :)

evaporated milk not the same as condensed. thanks for all of your replies! unfortunately dont have a waitrose anywhere near me, a quick search on their website tells me the nearest is 189 miles away! so a tad far for a 50p saving lol!

waitrose now price match tescos so a lot of their branded goods are cheaper than they were. i presume that all the supermarkets are having this on offer at some point or another.
