Young driver insurance

Hello, I assume many young drivers will post here and I have followed the tips already to getting cheap insurance. I got a quote from DirectLine and when I phoned them and asked about a few things they cancelled the quote due to me being under 21. I was using my mother as the main driver of my car(which is in my fathers name). I got a quote for about £985 with Aviva for a year. They asked me for proof of the 14 years of NCD on the Corsa 1.2 sxi I drive. The car is a 2004 reg and I have only owned the car since January this year. Obviously when I said about the 14 years NCD it was from all the cars my mother has drove in that time. I was away when they sent me the letters to send them and I missed the deadline and I was told to pay now £400 a month (which was ~£80 usually per month). I cancelled and had to pay £56 cancellation fee (Which they tried to increase).

I'm looking for help as my best quote at the moment(Me as the main driver) at £1890, I could get it cheaper if I carried out more time, but I thought before maybe wasting time i'd ask for any tips or any sites to recommend before doing this? I am not fortunate enough like my friends to have rich parents who bought the car for them or to pay their insurance for them. I only work part time and can't afford much insurance and it is looking like I will have to give up and sell the car and although I have not passed yet, I am very close and have spent countless house over the past couple of months practicing. I don't want my driving dreams crushed at this late stage.

Thanks

I wonder if they marked it on the database that you tried to defraud them?

If thats the case your not going to get cheap quotes anywhere.

And you risk getting future policies cancelled if you dont declare that.

Maybe you need to find that out 1st?

Thanks for replying. I did not know this could happen, any idea on how I can find out?

So summing up, your car is registered in your fathers name, you tried to insure it with your mother as the main driver and use her fourteen years NCD and you have not even passed your test yet, it is called 'fronting' and is illegal.

No wonder Direct Line didn't want to know, I should think if Aviva had found out you were trying to front the insurance they would have cancelled and you would have difficulty finding insurance with any company and that would crush your driving dreams.

There is no such thing nowadays as cheap insurance for young drivers especially when they have just passed their test, expect to pay at least £2000 and probably a lot more.

I haven't passed but I do need insurance to practice when i'm not on lessons, and since lessons are £20/hr, thats a lot more expensive. My car but my father used his card to do the transaction, I just never put it over into my name, but I will now. My mum was to be insured on the car so I could go out driving with an eligible person. I put her on the insurance and put in her NCD.

Direct Line didn't want to know since I was under 21 and under 21 drivers have to be on their own policy and they gave me a quote of £3k with a 33% discount on that since my mums car is with them. My friend drives a very similar car to mine, only difference his is a year older and he pays £1500 but thats because of admiral multi-car.

I've asked on other sites and everybody else has said give up. Absoultely rubbish at these prices, the only way to get an affordable would be doing fraud and acknowledging it, I know drivers who pass, get a car and can't afford insurance on it and then drive about with no insurance at all.

Does your mum drive the car at all? if you are the main driver you must be insured as such, which also means you can't use her NCD.

If you are going to practice in the car only you need to be insured, as long as the other person is over 21 and had their license for 3 years iirc then that is fine.

As you only need to be covered for learning have a look at collingwood learners.

Thanks. Yeah I did have a look at them but I seen it as more worthwhile just getting insurance for a year now as they cannot charge me extra on my premium when I pass, the actual insurer. I still don't understand learner driver insurance, what happens when I pass and lets say I had time left on my insurance? does it continue when I can drive or do I need to tell them and they will cancel?

With any insurer the policy would be based on you having a provisional. You would have to inform them when you pass your test (chances are you also would not be insured until they are notified as you would be driving not under the conditions of the policy).

They will probably just tell you how much extra you need to pay to keep the policy, or you could cancel and try and find it cheaper elsewhere.

If you are unsure on anything just ask the company and they will let you know what they expect. sometimes different insurers expect different things. finding one who will let you drive under the same policy when you pass without informing them would certainly work out cheaper.

The beauty of fronting is it's the policyholder who get's in trouble, so it would be the hapless parent whose history would be damaged by a voided / cancelled policy forever more.

I did look at a MultiCar quote with Admiral with my 2 parents, sounded ideal, my parents could switch over when theyr current policies finished, I got a quote for just me a £1400/ I thought, can't get much better than that, I asked them how much would it be after I pass and do I need to tell them? It would then go upto £3300(incl. the 33% online discount)
