Seriously how can you say its free when I obviously do not have a choice in taking a loan?
There is a cost with a loan and if I dont take a loan I increase the money I have going out.
Which country does that count as being free??

    Oh my word.

    Ok, here goes.

There are no tuition fees to pay, the cost of attending the course is therefore free.

However, you have to eat and live somewhere for the duration of the course. That isn't free, its hardly ever free for anyone!

The way that students are expected to pay for their living costs is through a loan with very reasonable terms. This is different to the way working people or jobseekers are expected to pay their living costs, as working people and jobseekers do not have access to this very generous loan.

You can't continue to be funded as though you're a jobseeker when you aren't. You will be a student and if you can't fund it entirely yourself and need outside help, then you need to accept the help that is available rather than trying to demand the help you think you deserve.

    Is that any clearer?

I do understand what you are saying, but you can't expect the government to pay you to educate yourself - that was your choice, in the same way that you chose to have children. Single people have to take out the maintenance loan and all of my friends work like demons over the summer. If you don't want to "take" the loan then take it and invest it - but it sounds as if you need the money to survive. But you are not entitled to be "paid" by the government to go to university.

As mentioned by others if you are able to increase your hours at work, perhaps through taking overtime, then do that - I have six hours of tutorials each week, and whilst I have a lot of self studying to do I could almost work full time and do my degree.

At my uni the student of the year is a mature student with 4 children who was widowed when all children were at primary school. She's just gained a first class honours degree. She's quite inspirational and I'm sure if she can do it, you can bite the bullet, take the loan, get your qualifications and improve the lives of you and your family which is why I'm assuming you are at uni.
