First Direct - Online banking

Hi - First Direct seems to be flavour of the month at the moment. I agree their telephone service is very good if you want telephone banking. But - am I the only one who finds their on line banking system a bit poor? I recently moved to FD from RBS. There are a number of things which can't be done on the FD system e.g. a Transaction Search; and the system is not as user friendly as it could be. The RBS system was much more slick.

  • You are not the first person to have said this. I am with FD and am happy with their service; people who are not seem to be like you in that they have seen better elsewhere, which I have not, and/or need to do things that FD doesn't have the facilities for, which I do not.

Have you tried their advanced internet banking - I never have?

If you prefer RBS there is nothing stopping you transferring back.
Is that not the bank whose computer systems were completely fracked the other week, and whose Ulster bank customers still are?

  • Why not use the message facility to tell them about your opinion of their facilities after transferring: they might do something if enough customers complain.

NO you're not alone. I think FD internet banking is now due a upgrade.

Personally if I was looking for an excuse to claim the leaving gift, though not eligible, I'd use this as my reason for why I was unhappy with them. That might carry some weight on getting it updated.

Perfect reason to get the leaving gift, or you could just open a savings account, put £1 in it and just use FD for the 8% regular saver. Your choice.

My salary goes into FD, but TSB have my DDs and SOs. I just leave £300/month in the FD account for the RS. I don't think FD has any other advantages really.

Their internet banking is basic and looks and feels updated.

They've stated that it will be updated "this year".
Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right! :D
  • I've been with FD since 1991. I sympathise about the inadequacy of their internet service, even some of the functions they DO offer online won't work with firefox, opera browsers.

And sometimes it takes them days to act on a secure message you send them, I don't know if their secure message system is overworked or understaffed but they've definitely got problems there.

Having been with them so long perhaps it's time I dipped my toe in the water to see what else is on offer.

Whilst I agree about the website, the lack of a Contactless card, and the fact that they don't do those nice leather credit card holders any more, this is outweighed for me by being able to pick up the phone at any hour talk to a real person who is always polite friendly and competent.
