Possession wrote: »Have just been in my new Aldi. First impressions - my FIL will definitely hate it and I'll never get him in there! LOL. Prices definitely cheaper than all but Tesco value. Not much impressed by any of the seasonal type products but will go back Thursday morning for school uniform. I got various little bits and pieces to try and presuming we like them will definitely go back, but not to do a big shop as I can't bear the policy of having to shove all your stuff in a trolley and pack elsewhere. Very nice to have the choice though. Waitr*se opened on the same day so Mr T is obviously feeling threatened - huge cover adverts in the local paper this week!
Possession I think you must live near me - the Aldi has opened opposite Tesco in town and Waitrose have opened on the edge of town over the river bridge? If so I live in a small town along the road where Waitrose are (my town bearing the same name as the road and is about 11 miles away)...LOL - did any of that make any sense at all??
Anyway - hello to all those posters I know from the older tough threads and hello to those I'm meeting for the first time. Haven't posted for a few months, and only just found this thread a few days ago. I'm really enjoying reading through it - am up to about page 108 and will try and be up to date by tomorrow night. Have to see my consultant tomorrow, so am reading like fury tonight to try and keep my mind occupied, as I have some scary blood tests scheduled tomorrow to check I'm still in remission (those of you who "know" me might remember I was diagnosed with Non Hogkin Lymphoma late last year).
So many brave people still ploughing on - and GreyQueen still making me howl with laughter with her posts.

Hello Taurusgb, yes you're right and it does make sense! Dh's grandparents live in the same town as you. I haven't visited the W*itrose yet and I'll be back at Aldi tomorrow morning to get their school uniform offer so Mr W will just have to wait.
Wishing you luck with your tests tomorrow.Possession I think you must live near me - the Aldi has opened opposite Tesco in town and Waitrose have opened on the edge of town over the river bridge? Phew I've caught up!! Just wanted to say to all those with greasy hair ( mine has to be washed every day or looks awful) a hairdresser told me to buy a cheap 20p bottle of shampoo and a cheap washing up liquid. Wash your hair with the cheap shampoo rinse then use your normal shampoo and conditioner, then blow dry (either all or just the roots of your hair - once a week swap the cheap shampoo for Wup liquid.
The idea is that the the first wash takes all the grease out of your hair and the second washcleans it and gives it a shine - blow drying the roots dry's them our rather than drying naturally which produces oils. When you do the washing up liquid once a week it strips the grease off, apply it to dry hair on the roots (the worst areas) for 10 mins before shower ( like soaking a greasy pan lol) then wash out and wash as normal.
This gives my hair 2 days 3 if its a house day and can pin it back. Worked great for me can't use the washing up liquid too often as my hair git static but my hair was lovely clean and shiny and I didn't wake up looking all greasy! Hope this helps someone!Living the simple life0 -

Care to share your vegan ice cream recipe? We've gone off swedish glace as they've "poshed it up" (according to my boys) by putting real vanilla bits in it - they like a plain boring ice cream to put on crumble etc. Youngest finds real vanilla goes for the back of his throat a bit as well, and having so many allergies it worries us!
Thanks,

Our social housing stock has really deteriorated under the new HA - they have pots of money to do new kitchens/bathrooms but seemingly none to do normal repairs. Coupled with that rents have risen, they've stopped the right to buy in all areas around here and with the "bedroom tax" coming in it's getting dire since we have no one-bedroomed houses.
No problem, except mum's got her ice cream book back now & was watching the swimming when I phoned her! She said it was pretty much soya cream, a sweet white sauce thickened with arrowroot, cool it all then whisk it up.
I did some the other day with a cup of ready made soya custard, a cup of cherry pie filling & a cup of soya yoghurt, which was enjoyed by all (DS1 is usually very fussy about anything with fruit in it) in the ice cream maker for about 30 minutes.0 -
Got 48p back from asda as part of their price guarantee on comparable items. Not bad for a quick check.
Picked up my crochet multicolour indoor coat again as I have realised it's only 4 weeks until the start of autumn. I know I will be down if I'm cold in the house it I'm determined to stave it off as I don't want the heating on during the day. 4 weeks, I need me some sun!0 -
Katie I hope things went well tonight. Not good when you can't get work done and the place is awful.
DD2 is in a very big house that was supposed to be fine. It is anything but and they are planning to move in the next few months. They are going to try either a direct landlord let or another agency. This one is rubbish.0 -
Hello TaurusGB :j - nice to "meet" you and good luck with your tests tomorrow. I am also quite near to you and Possession - town beginning with E about 15 miles from each of you! It's a small world...!
Tink - thanks for the hair tips; I will give that a go as my hair is a greasy nightmare and it would be good to be able to manage without washing it every day.
GQ - you speak a lot of sense about the benefits system. I have been in the position of Smug Person (although I hope without the crashingly insensitive attitude towards the sick and vulnerable!) and we are certainly seeing things from a new perspective now that DH has been made redundant. He is going to go and sign on as soon as we have written confirmation of redundancy; this is all new to us as we have both always worked and have paid contributions for over 40 years between us. In return, DH will get JSA for six months, but after that we have been told we will be expected to live on my (pretty paltry) part time income, if he hasn't found another job by that time, as the Govt apparently believes that my income should be ample to keep the four of us. It would be funny if it weren't so awful.
I really don't know how things will be if DH doesn't find work soon. I have been packing out the storecupboard like there's no tomorrow as I'm conscious that things will get very tight indeed if DH can't find another job within 6 months. We will manage, because we have to. But things may well get very bleak. We have some savings (really wish now that we had not ordered and paid for the new kitchen, but then hindsight is a marvellous thing, and we had no inkling of DH's impending job loss when it was ordered and paid for) - the remaining savings are my "emergency" fund and will be put to use if necessary.
It's the uncertainty I am finding hard. I need a crystal ball!

Katie - if the flat is that bad call the environmental health dept, they can either force the work or negate any contract I believe, no one should have to live like that, and if its making them ill they should get to see their GP and have it noted on the file.
Alternatively we could send PAH and GQ to sort them out0 -
Taurus is lovely to have you home again - hope all goes well with your tests0
