Hi I have an old Compaq Presario 6000 which is quite slow atm.

It has 2 slots for RAM, with 1 slot being take by 512 mb
the other slot empty.

What is the most RAM that I can put in the slots please?
Do the slots have to have the same amount ?

Don't know if these are any good. You can have two of them at the most. 2GB.

Thanks, I have some spare RAM and wanted to put in the biggest amount that the system would allow.

I think I have a 1GB and a 512GB and was wondering if that would work ok, being 2 different sizes................I guess the only way to see, is to try it.

    thanks

What operating system are you running? XP, Vista 32, vista 64 or w7?

I know that Vista 32 will only recognise up to 3gb of ram, not sure about the others but think XP is less and Vista64 and W7 more. Also you have to tell the system what is installed. Also if you have dual processor you have to tell the system again. Computers are extremely dumb.

    It's running xp.

The PC is for my 86 yr old mum. Her old computer has broken and has been replaced by a wizzy Windows 7 pc... super fast.... however, she can't install her favourite games on it so is looking to have a 2nd one to play her card games on :) I was trying to update a pc that I got from freecycle so that it wasn't so slow..

I can see Desktop 1GB DDR PC3200 non-ecc going for 99p (used) on ebay if you're sharp - worthwhile doing this inconjunction with Closed's sticky (don't suppose Granny will be doing mainteneance too often!
