ATOL problems

I've heard that if a travel company charges you for ATOL insurance and something goes wrong with the holiday it means you can't claim from your credit card company?

If you pay the £2.50 APC (ATOL Protection Fee) you are guaranteed that the CAA will arrange repatriation and a refund if necessary. The CAA have arrangements with some credit card companies that the CAA pay and some that the card company does. If a credit card wasn't used, the CAA will always arrange to protect you0

With all the big tour operator failures of the last few years, the advice from ATOL themselves had been that if you payed on a credit card, you claim from the credit card company. Some card companies have tried to deny they are liable but that's just stalling tactics on their behalf.
ATOL comes into its own if your tour operator/airline fails whilst you are abroad. They will fly you home, in most cases they will arrange a flight for you, or will reimburse your costs. Without ATOL you sshoukd be able to claim from your card provider but that's likely to be a long drawn out process.0
