Saw a cheapish dvd writer (£35, Maplins), though it needs USB 2.0 -
are all writers like this, as my pc only has 1.0 ?
If so, is it easy to install a 2.0 port?

You can buy a USB2 PCI controller card.

Cheap enough. Just make sure you have a spare PCI slot by opening the case and checking to see if there is a free white socket.0 -
Most computers these days are USB 2.0. However, if you do not have USB 2.0 port then you can install a USB 2.0 card (provided, you have a spare PCI port)

Note: Opening your casing and installing new parts etc can also damage motherboard or other parts. If you do not have technical know-how then better take it to some qualified person.Mortgage deposit pot June 2012 = almost there.

I think I can manage the install, thanks for info - back of pc has 3 bare panels, and spec of model confirms this as for PCI..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

What are you trying to achieve - post 2 is all about tv?
If you are just after a standard writer for a pc, an internal one (pata) is much cheaper, and easy to fit!!
