Cutting tree down

I have a small (15ft high) rather ugly tree in my back garden thats been totally overtaken by ivy (our vendors were not green fingered in the slightest).
Its tucked behind the shed and as a result, I'm losing about 6ft of garden space as I could move the shed back in to the far corner.
Can I just take a saw to it and get rid of it or do I have to jump through any council hoops?
Thanks,
Paul

Depends on the tree, we were astonished to find the holly bush in my daughters garden was the subject of a preservation order,
Contact the local council and ask, we did the same, and told them the holly was not there when we moved in, whistling emoticon please.;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
You could just claim it "died".
I hear drilling a hole into the trunk, the liberal addition of some diesel and a short wait often causes trees to "die" inexplicably.0
