Help!! I need a cheaper alternative to Royal Canin

Hi

We have a boxer dog who is just over a year old, and we have been feeding him Royal Canin Maxi Junior. However its proving really costly, so I am after some suggestions for a cheaper food that is still good quality.

Many thanks!

What about James Wellbeloved, I'm pretty sure it's made by the same people?

I tend to buy my dog food from Costco. It’s so much cheaper here. Only problem is, and everyone says it - you go into Costco for one item and end up walking out with a whole shopping trolley full of stuff!!

I am also using Royal Canin for our 10 week old pup. Have a look at CSJ foods. They are generally well thought of and have several ranges to choose from. If you email them they will send you samples for your dog to try free of charge.

Does anyone know what make of food Costco sell?

Costco sell, Bakers, another couple of known brands and their own brand called Kirkland. If you look at the ingredients in their own brand - its REALLY good.

My friends dogs all had the squits when fed on Kirkland :eek:.

ASSISI where I volunteer won't feed that due to partly ethical reasons but also the addatives in it.My Daisy likes the RC Exigent but also likes Purina One,which is pretty good stuff.

Zooplus do bulk deals that bring the cost down to as low as £3/kilo. Have to buy two 15KG bags to get the very best price. Link

First order gets automatic 10% discount and shipping is free when you spend over £19.

We buy cat food there and the service is very good.

  • Could you give an idea of what it's costing you just now & how much you can afford to spend?

Eg cost / week, do you bulk buy, do you buy big bags or small ones (which always work out more expensive) etc - it would help with advising.

Skinners do a good hypoallergenic range (Duck & Rice, Salmon & Rice & Turkey & Rice only) which is gluten, dairy, cereal free: http://www.skinnerspetfoods.co.uk/products/field---trial-products/duck---rice/

Cheapest place atm seems to be Vet UK & it's just under £21.50 for a 15kg of Duck & Rice.

    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000

Please do try CSJ food. It's £30 for two 15kg bags delivered so that works out at £1 a kilo.

Excellent quality too. I used to feed Hill's Science Plan costing about £38 for 12 kg but my dogs always had the trots on that. When I switched to CSJ that all stopped, and even my older dog's mobility problems have cleared up. They don't do much advertising, most of their sales come via referrals from satisfied dog owners.

If you contact them via their website they'll send you some samples.

You shouldn't look at the cost per bag but instead look at the cost per day based on amount fed. It is surprising that some of the more expensive foods to buy are actually quite economical in the long run.
