Fading a facial scar

Options
Hello

I recently had an accident & had to have 5 stiches underneath my nose, just above the lip. Going to have a scar been told it will fade but i was wondering if anyone has used any of the prods advertised to fade scars e.g. Bio Oil. Are thet any good, any recommendations.

Or is their anything else i could do?

Thanks

Bio oil is good but make sure you put it on a few times a day. It lasts for ages; I've had my bottle since 2008 and it's only a quarter gone (but I am ridiculously bad at using it regularly) - it's one of the smallest bottles too.

Palmers Cocoa butter is supposed to be good as well but I've never used it, only heard it recommended.

If the scar is raised, neither of them will completely eradicate it but will take the redness out. If it's not raised, it should all be disappear within a few months.

  • My Mum was recommended dermatix by plastic surgeon. Very light gel.

I have just bought trilogy organic rosehip oil and that is for scars etc, its really good. Lovely product.

Bio oil does help if you apply it regularly - as well as using the product it's important to massage the scar while you apply it because the action helps.

I used bio-oil after a keyhole op about 2 years ago and my scars are barely visible now. My mum used it too, after a fairly severe burn scarred her face/neck, and you can barely see it now.

It seems expensive when you buy it but a bottle does last for ages so I think it's pretty good value for money.

You need to start applying something pronto, oils can only help while the skin is still healing. Once it has healed there's nothing that can make much difference.

The goal is to keep your skin moisturised and keep the elasticity up. Any oil or butter will do, even olive oil from the supermarket. Rosehip oil is very soothing but you don't need to pay a ton of money for it - if you find a website that sells cosmetics supplies it is much cheaper. I have found raspberry seed oil very good for general redness on my face, so it might be good for scars too.

Unrefined oils have more nutrients than refined oils, but need to be used up quicker.

This is one of my favourite companies, their oils are a bit expensive but postage is cheap:

This is another, much cheaper products but higher postage:

I am sure the bit of Palmers and Bio Oil that actually makes a difference it the vitimin E. You would probably get the same results using anything with a good amount of Vit E in it.

Just found this post as I have an inch long scar on my forehead following an accident. I was told to massage in olive oil - has anyone tried this? And how often should I apply it? And for how long - until the scar fades??

    Thanks

I had surgery and was told to use a good oil. I don't think it matters too much which one, it's the massage action that does the work.

You need to massage in some oil at least 2 a day, more if you can manage it. Massage for a good few minutes, lightly and gently, no need to "scrub".

How long the scar takes to fade will depend very much on your skin type, the skill of your surgeon etc. The worst of the redness should take a few weeks, full healing and fading can take several months.

Once the initial healing has taken place you can wear make up. I waited about 4 weeks to be on the safe side. Mineral make up is good for hiding scars.

For really heavy duty scarring you can get special camouflage make up, Laura Mercer, Clinique etc.
  • Definitely bio oil. My little boy cut his forehead open and had 5 stitches.
Researching on the Internet it recommended massaging bio oil in a circular motion. We did this daily and the scar is barely viable. It's a very thin silvery line now.
I also used bio oil when pregnant and didn't get a single stretch mark.
  • You can get a cheaper alternative to Bio-Oil called Rescue-Oil, I think it's pretty much the same product...alot cheaper though :)
