HSBC Charges

My wife stupidly went about £250 over drawn and buried her head in the sand. When I found out in April this debt had increased to £900 purely with charges. We rang Hsbc to discuss a payment plan and to see if any of the charges could be removed as £650 of charges is alot of money. The man on the phone said he could n0t remove any charges but he would put the account on hold so no further charges would be added. We agreed to pay £100 back in to the account every month, which we have been doing, today we have found out that we have still been incurring charges and the debt is now at£965.40.

any advice will be much appreciated.

I know this may not be much help to yourself but just wait until the USA start to pursue HSBC for their involvement in the LIBOR scandal - then sit back, relax, have a beer and think 'yep, these babies are going to see just what it means to squirm".

    I would suggest the following:

    1. Any correspondence - keep copies - even when using messages via internet banking - keep copies of them together with time/date signature.

    2. Contest charges - were they correct, are you in financial difficulties?

    3. Listen to what others say on this site - there are some ppl who post !!!! but there are also many others who through their experience can provide some much needed help.

I wish you all the best.

Put pen to paper and start a formal complaint if indeed they stated the account/charges would be frozen, but they have not.
Have you not been monitoring the account at all?
Please post the statement with the transactions to see how the charges have been calculated (remember to remove/block out any personal info)

Maybe it's a little crass to be pointing it out (in which case, sorry!), but after running up £650 in charges because your wife didn't check the statements - why did you then not check the statements again!

I assume HSBC recorded the call? If so, try and get them to listen to it - once they've heard it confirmed you should be able to then get all the new charges back.

If they won't listen to it you may need to request a copy of it (for £10 I believe) then provide proof back to them, which should then get you the charges back as well (plus the £10 you had to pay for the recording).
