freeview box problems

Options
We have a Humax HD freeview box which isn't giving us a good reception.
I think we had a better reception through just the ariel which has a booster btw than through the box. We keep getting the picture very pixalated (SP?) or a message coming up saying the picture is scrambled or not broadcasting and this happens even on BBC1 and ITV.
I set it up to record last week when I had to go away and only some of the programmes recorded ( was just the Soaps)
Any ideas anyone please ??

And now I have the joy of having my foster granddaughter becoming my real granddaughter. Can't ask for anything better

UPDATE,

You need to clarify this sentence for us first....

Tell us exactly what the setup is, and in what circumstance you had 'better reception'

As above. How's your aerial, booster and aerial wiring? Can you get the Humax to show you the signal strength?

IIRC, the SW of the country only did the switch to fully digital fairly recently, and part of that process was to turn up the transmitter power on the digital channels.

It's possible that the signal level is now too strong. If the booster has a level control, try turning it down. If it doesn't, try it without the booster in circuit.

Just had a quick look at the signal strength and it seems to be 30% or under. We do live at the bottom of a hill and also very very close to the sea(internet sometimes doesnt pick up we are in the UK). We cannot get a very good mobile phone reception or listen to DAB radio.
I will have to get my other half to look at the booster as it is in the storage under the house and I dont go there LOL
We didn't seem to have much of a problem when we just used the ariel but was limited to certain channels.
