As someone who did statistics at university (and almost studied actuarial maths until I realised I would certainly die from suicide before the age of 30 if I did) I can say I am almost certainly, at the very least 0% sure that £54K is enough. If life were predictable then my actuarial friends (the ones who did survive and are now very wealthy) would be out of a job.

Does this have any relevance to the rapid rise in the cost of private school education. I recall rises well above the rate of wage inflation during my time of paying fees.

Though having audited private school accounts some years back. I do know how extremely profitable some were. Might have charitable status but are businesess as well.

I wonder if some parents ever ask themselves 'how do some of these kids in state schools manage to come out with straight A's?'
  • My 3 children all went to state schools. They have all gone on to university, one is now a teacher, one an engineer. And they have amazing self-confidence and beautiful manners. In fact, it is often commented on by people who are almost total strangers :D

I'm not anti private schools but it does wind me up when people make sweeping assumptions like this

Send your kids to state school.

That will help a great deal with your financial problems.

OP probably wants their kids to be able to read and write when they leave school.

It's not a case of sides. Both private and state schools can be good and bad. Private schools are of a higher quality but you cannot polish a turd.

To suggest that someone should use state education for their kids "because theirs turned out alright" is such a stunning, moronic statement that I would suggest a DNA test to check they are actually yours because clearly, they haven't inherited their intelligence from you.

It's a personal decision based on income, location and philosophy and judgement of said decision is purely spite based on petty class wars.

Yes but when someone risks financial problems to fulfil their dreams for their children or to put it another way they simply can't afford it, it's called living beyond your means or keeping up with the Joneses and is the financial ruin for many a family.

Isn't that what many a private school specializes in? Adding polish.

Of course you still get a turd, but it looks and smells a lot nicer. And probably ends up with a career in banking. :rotfl:
