My plan is to get a m&s 3 tier wedding cake, 1 fruit and 2 sponge, but im terrified of doing the whole dowel/stacking thing:eek: what if i ruin it:eek:
Then i cant decide on what decorations to get for it without it looking tacky:o its been the simpliest things what im stressing about

Firstly, they advise that the fruit needs to be on the bottom as it's so heavy! Could the venue help with the dowels? They usually have plenty of experience at setting up cakes.
Perhaps some lace for round the tiers, and some flowers for in between and on top?7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs14 Feb: 10st4.5lbs

heya yummy mummy
here is a good basic guide for putting dowels in and where to put them http://www.cake-decorating.co.uk/techniques-tips/stacking-cakes/
i am having ribbon and flowers - i dont know what your flowers are but you can use real ones or sugar ones are easy to make or even buy online http://www.cakecraftshop.co.uk/shop/6/95/ (just the first link on google)
or with ribbon and a pretty topper http://www.cakecraftshop.co.uk/shop/7/ (from the same website as above just as some ideas)
it depends on what style your wedding is and the colour scheme and flowers but it can all be very easily done with a small amount of knowledge
good luck xThe only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 50 -
An easier alternative is to buy a cake stand - we had an M&S cake and got a three tier stand from ebay for about £25 (and sold it after for profit!)
The dowels were going to be about £10 anyway IIRC, and seemed like far more hassel.
Plus the stand helps to elevate the cakes, making them look a bit bigger.0 -
Our venue is providing a 3 tier cake stand for us (for our home made cake) - and we are just decorating out cake with ribbons and flowers and a bride and groom for the top of it.
Its the icing of ours i'm worrying aboutWeight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
Go for it! So satisfying decorating your own cake!
Firstly, before you begin to assemble, inspect each and every cake all the way around to choose for the front of your cake, these cakes are mass produced and may have the occasional lump, bump or slight ripple in the icing.
You can't really mess up the dowelings, on the bottom tier (yes, use the fruit at bottom for support) I'd go for 5 in a hexagon shape- as long as you cut them so that they're flush with the top of the cake you'll be fine (and don't be scared of pulling them out and re-inserting if they're bit too long, the cake above will be covering the top). The 2nd cake got for 3 dowelings.
Decoration wise, keep it simple. You could ask your florist to make a fresh flower cake top from the same as your bridal flowers, all they would need is the top tier measurements, you could go for a cake topper (don't think automatically from a cake speciallist, ornaments can be great too like this, use some matching ribbon to the bridal colours around the lower edges of your cakes easily pinned in at the back using dressmakers pearl headed pins (this also is a good way to prettily cover up any slight icing imperfections around the base of the cake), you can easily push in roses in groups around the cake like this, when you place the flowers, you are trying to get the person looking at it to move their eyes down the cake like a snake so think of an S formation, that is the most appealing for the eye.
Finally, once you've finished, take a picture of it on your phone or camera and look at it, things can look quite different in a picture, you can spot any gaps or imperfections in your decorations and correct them before it's big unveiling at the reception.
Don't stress- enjoy the process and good luck!!0 -
Yes I'm doing this and worrying the same! Thanks for the links with tips on, going to have a read. We are having ribbon around each layer and a small flower arrangement on the top.Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0

I´ll be having an M and S ready made cake for my wedding too. And have decided to by one of those icing cutters that makes the tiny flower shapes to add on a cherry blossom tree in pink. I think they would look nice in ivory too.0 -
If you're pushing flowers/bits into the cake that aren't edible, be careful! You can get flower 'picks' that you put the flower into and then push into the cake which stops you from contaminating the cake and means that it's safe to eat, without any stray bits of flower or wire being left in it.
