Mastercard (debit card) refund to an expired card

I have recently cancelled an insurance policy and I have had a refund sent to a card which has expired.
My Mastercard expired last year as my new card started which is normal - I didn't realize that the number changes on debit cards (credit cards do not).
The insurance company have said that they have sent the refund to the card that was used to pay for the insurance (which I true, but it's expired) and they say they cannot do anything about it.
My bank has also said they cannot do anything about and contact the insurance company. The bank has said that usually the insurance company would be notified that the account number is invalid.
I've tried to find a contact for Mastercard to see if the two accounts can be somehow tied together but cannot find anything on the website.
Anybody any ideas where to go with this one?

Generally the card numbers are linked so the funds will be refunded back to your account.
If this does now happen the funds may sit the bank suspense account until they are claimed.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
If credit card or debt card numbers change or not on the new card is down to the card issuer and there is no standard across the board answer.
There certainly normally aren't any issues with a payment going back to an expired card number, it is standard anti-money laundering process that you only ever refund back to the payment card. Absolute worse case is that your bank put it into a suspense account and when you query it they move it across from there to your account but I'd be surprised if that happened rather than just going straight into your account0
