You can probably pay extra to have the cheque presented under "special clearance" described here (click the relevant heading) http://www.ukpayments.org.uk/resources_publications/faqs/cheques/
This won't mean OP gets his money any quicker.
The special clearance only gets a promise to pay and cleared funds are available as now on day 4 of the clearing cycle.

Possibly. But it's not a certainty.

Bank A takes the cheque. Day 0.

Sends it via internal mail to their own delivery centre. Day 1.

Posts it second class to the drawing branch. Arrives day 4.

The drawing branch don't deal with it and have to send it off to a processing centre. Day 5.

Yes, you will then get cleared funds in the account. Assuming the receiving branch remember to chase it up for you.

    But for speed, nah.

It depends how the bank operates - Halifax (certainly used to) send special presentation cheques first class directly to the processing centre at the drawing bank, on the day that the cheque is handed in to the branch.

So if Royal Mail and the drawing bank are operating properly, confirmation is received the following afternoon.

Ah, there were some branches who did it properly!
