Help Do I Need to Do a Tax Return

Hi,
I am not sure if I have put this in the correct place but I couldnt see another obvious place to put it.

I use to own a limited company and earn quite alot of money as a consultant. I gave it up nearly 7 years ago and closed down the company. So I was no longer a Director which is why I had to do Tax Returns. Until last year I had to complete a Tax Return every year but they wrote to me and told me I no longer had to complete one.

I am not ritired(in my 40s) I am currently a Student and occassionally did the odd temp job for a few weeks. My issue is that I wrote to the Inland Revenue asking how I can claim back the money(tax) from my bank accounts as I dont earn enough to reach my personal allowance. They have now come back to me and want to to start me doing a Tax Return again!

Isn't there any simplier way of getting the interest back on my bank accounts without having to do a Tax Return.
