Why am being refused a credit card?

Hi
I have previously applied for a tesco credit card and a halifax credit card. Both were 0% on purchases and came with benefits like tesco clubcard points.
I put it down to bad credit as I struggled to pay my phone contract a few years ago when I came out of work but I have checked my credit score and it is good.
I understand banks are not lending as much but still believe there must be more of a reason.
Any ideas?
Thanks

They're not easy to get as starter cards. Try your bank or aqua, etc.0

That'll probably be it.
You mentioned a credit score, which implies that you've checked with a CRA and they've give you one. Forget about this figure as it literally means nothing. The information on the report like the way you've managed your credit accounts etc is the most important thing. If you missed payments on a monthly phone contract then it will most definitely be on there, which means you'll not be accepted for a mainstream card like Tesco or Halifax.
