No Claims Discount confirmation wording
Hi all,
I cancelled my car insurance and they've sent me out a letter confirming my NCD. It says, "We confirm that all cover by this policy ceased on 03/07/2012 when 5 years No Claim Discount applied. The NCD was not protected and 1 claim was notified. 17/05/2010 - NCD affected."
I'm a bit confused. When I had the accident in question, they told me if I was found liable (which I was) I would keep two years of my NCD, so presumably should now have four years. At the time, I assumed that making a claim would mean I was back to zero NCD, so I might have been so relieved that I remembered what they said incorrectly and maybe it was three years.
I just wanted to check that the above wording does mean I have 5 years NCD for when I get new insurance in a few months, and not that it means something daft like, "You would have had five years if not for this accident."

4 years no claims may have dropped to 2 or 3 years after one claim.
So dropped to 3 years then another 2 added sounds right?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
OP, how much NCD did you actually have at the time of the claim?0

That's a good question, neilmcl. Um... I had a Motability car for three years, so that's three. Then I'd had that car for two years exactly when I had that accident, so another two. It should have been five, therefore.
And forgotmyname, that does sound right but I was so sure he said I had two years that I've been checking car insurance quotes based on that.
I mean, the letter says they confirm that five years NCD applied at the date I canceled my policy, so I assume that's what they mean. I was just so sure it should have been four that it's worried me I was wrong.
ETA. I probably out to just ring them and check, didn't I?!0 -
Assuming your renewal is July and if you had 5 years NCD when you renewed in 2009, the claim would have cost you 2 years plus that year in question, so you would have had 3 years come your renewal in July 2010 (you would of had 6 by then if claim free) plus the 2 years since then you do indeed have 5 years NCD going forward.0
