Can I add someone as a named driver who already has a policy of their own?

Hi,
My dad has insurance on his car. I need to get insurance on my own car. Of course I will be the policy holder as I'm the main driver but can I add him as a named driver? If so, can I say he has x years no claims discount or does this only count on his own policy?
Thanks.

Yes add him, no on no claims discount for 2 reasons.
1) It is only the Policyholders NCD that counts
2) An NCD can only be use on one policy at a time
What you can (and must) do is give his claims history (ie he has been claims free for X years) and this is factored into the premium
Claims history and NCD are two separate things. Because of NCD protection and how NCD works you could have had a dozen claims in the last 5 years with 3 of them being fault accidents and yet still have the maximum NCD0 -
OK cool. He hasn't had a claim in 20+ years and I've had no claims in 5+ years (although I have no "no claims discount" because I was on his policy). So I can put I haven't had a claim but 0 years no claims discount.
Thanks.

You might also want to try his insurers for a quote for your own policy. As you have been a named driver on his and are clearly in your 20's they might give you an intro bonus - you can only ask!0

But it might be. Adding myself and my wife to our daughter's policy reduced a 19-year old's premium from £1200 to £560.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
