Combi drill recommendation

I am looking to purchase a new drill driver combo after my B&D has given up the ghost. It will only be used for general DIY jobs, although I would like an 18v. What would you recommend. I have heard that Makita are one of the best and to avoid DeWalt.

I have heard that Makita are one of the best and to avoid DeWalt.
Did you hear that off a Makita fan boi?
All the drill/drivers at the same price points, from the main brands, are of equal quality. Tradespeople will have their preferences, but they all do the same job equally as well
So pick any that meets your needs, with the functions you want at the price you want to pay.
I'd only add that be sure you need an 18v. These are typically much heavier than lower voltage units, and you will rarely need 18v worth of power around the home0 -
What opinions of this

Or the DeWalt at £129.

Nope.... Ni-Cad battery, takes longer to charge and doesn't last as long
Or the DeWalt at £129.

This is the one, Li-Ion battery, 30 mins charge, last for ages (and I mean ages, not just an hour!) and this is the more popular one.
My thoughts in blue, I actually sell things like this for a living and deal with a lot of trades people. Hope this helps
Just to add from a personal point of view, the DeWalt feels better when handling it too.0 -
We have a number of cordless drills ( Bosch , Dewalt(2) , Milwaukee and Makita) - used by my son and me.
The Milwaukee is the best but was very expensive.
I think that the Dewalt is the best value for money. The old DC988 has been going strong for years on the original Ncd batts.
I handled the £129 18v Li-ion Dewalt when in Screwfix earlier this week. It is extremely light and if I needed another that is what I would buy.Forgotten but not gone.0 -
I've had the Makita for the last two years of heavy DIY use. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit for the price - and comes with a spare battery too. Not had a job it couldn't do yet.

Err, the Makita comes with a 30 minute charger, so how does it take longer to charge than the Dewalt with it's 30 minute charger?
And there is not a great deal of difference between the Makita 1.3Ah battery and the Dewalt 1.5Ah. But the two batteries in the Makita kit will last longer than the one in the Dewalt kit.
The main issue with choosing between Li-Ion and NiCad is that the Li-Ion battery will be lighter, and will retain a charge longer when not in use. This may be useful for infrequent DIY as the battery will likely have have power when it comes to be used every few weeks. But with a 30min charge time, the Makita NiCad wont be a big issue if it needs a quick charge
Two batteries would be better than one for extended use. Whether the OP will need this is something to think about
Out of the two, performance being equal, the Makita kit is the better value. But try and handle these in the shop to see how they feel0 -
The charge on the ni-cd batteries does not last as long, I have known people get 1 hours work out of a ni-cd and then having to charge it again and the 30 mins doesn't give a full charge.
Like I say, I talk to a lot of tradespeople and diy people and 99% of them will go for the lithium battery every time, even if the drill comes with 2 cadmium batteries they will still go for the one lithium.0 -
Is this one worth the extra?

To be honest, I would still go with the Dewalt, why not go into your local store and ask to have a look at them, handle them and see which one 'feels' best for you and chat to the staff about them, heck there might even be the odd tradesman or two that will chip in with their twopenneth!0
