worried about contractor replacing next doors party wall

I feel really guilty about this but i do need some advice.
we bought our house from cross keys which was formally a council property.
Cross Keys are now going to put a warm flat roof on our party flat roof for insulation etc.
So far they will not say whether or not the final roof will be higher on their side. They are refusing to tell us anymore at this stage. They are going to be replacing front and back roofs.
We are worried as this contractor has a very bad name around the area.
Also the fact our roof is a bit old now and we cannot afford a new one and obviously it my weaken and we don't know what questions to ask and where we stand legally with this. They only patch things if they do a repair job!!!
Unfortunatly, we have to think about our roofs in this case.
Please can someone advise, we got a letter put in our hand last night regarding the works and it is vague although we think that we know what is entailed. There is also a possible extra charge when we get ours replaced eventually, so a friend told us. We are having the roofer come out next week, we were told 2.00pm this afternoon.
