How long are you going to be away for, many policies have a maximum trip length of 30 days, so the length will reduce your options

Shouldn't whoever you've been given a scholarship with recommend specific providers? May not give you the best value, but it would at least give you a basic understanding of precisely what level of cover you will realistically need.

I will be staying for around 10 months, and the school recommended a health insurer but there is still the travel insurance.

The school recommended this ISM Independent School Management, couldn't post link

I would ask what the other students are doing, or maybe ask your course tutor / lecturer.

They are bound to have a provider somewhere you can use.

    Do you need travel insurance?

Health insurance is crucially important, but the other things covered by travel insurance (missing flights, losing luggage and so on) might not be needed.

Anyway, since you are going to be away for a long time look at "back-packer" insurance offered by Columbus and similar companies. Don't waste your time looking at annual policies, since these only cover a number of short trips (typically less than 30 days).

As of yet, I do not know any other students who are attending who are from somewhere other than the US, and I don't know if any others are from the UK at all, so I am at a loss, and the company which I have previously quoted is the one which they provided for health insurance but I was wondering if it would be better for me to get travel insurance which includes health insurance, or whether I should get them separate?

I need health insurance of course, however I will be taking things such as laptop etc, so I need those covered!

Ask your parents to check whether their existing home contents insurance covers these. And don't assume that travel insurance would cover them: my American Express travel policy (among the better products on the market) excludes computers and most electronic equipment.

You will need health insurance and travel insurance. As you will be in America for 10mths I doubt very much you will get a cheap travel insurance that will provide anywhere near the level of cover you need for 10mths in the US. You should go with the one that has been recommended to you.
Travel insurance wise, you should look at a cheap back-packer type policy which covers your flight being cancelled baggage etc.

Even really good contents insurance wont cover personal items if you are away from home for longer than a month?

Except that a cheap back-packer type policy would not cover laptops and would give only limited cover for baggage.
