Already it sounds like the seller is avoiding you and knew that the laptop had problems. i'd say your chances are slim, although you could try one of those online claims and see what happens. £100 is a significant amount to lose but you could rack up a further loss chasing after this...
You could try reselling it on ebay. i sold three laptops on ebay, two were working, one blue screened, which i stated in the listing. The faulty one made more than one of the working ones, so you might not lose too much by reselling it. You don't necessarily have to say it has a faulty HDD and you've been quoted £100 to fix it, simply state the facts - that it blue screens and your not a computer techie.
Also, do you not know a handy friend who could put a hard disk in for you? its not that tricky, and you've already installed the recovery disks before anyway.
With dell currently doing a brand new laptop with 120Gb HDD, 1Gb RAM, dvd rewriter, wireless, Windows Vista and a 15.4 inch screen for £351 - check out the 1501 deals on https://www.dmxdimension.co.uk - i'd find it hard to justify buying a laptop ebay.0 -

Hi
Not sure what you can do on ebay. I thought i'd reply to bump it back up the list and see if maybe someone can advise on what you can claim?0
